Attention film fans: take some vacation time from work, call the babysitter, turn off your phone and pack some snacks. This month is overflowing with film fun. Here’s a partial list:

* April 13 — Inland Empire screening at Eckerd College — I’m not quite sure how this film fits into the International Cinema Series, but for a chance to see David Lynch’s latest weirdness on screen — for free, no less — I’m not picky about categories. Click here for more info.

* April 13 — The Tampa Film Review at International Bazaar — If you’re one of the ten people in the Bay area who hasn’t heard of this free monthly screening of local films, click here to get up to speed.

* April 15 — Special screenings for Holocaust Remembrance Day on The Education Channel — Six films will be shown, including Elie Wiesel:Hearing the Voices and Treason of Honor. Visit the website for more info.

* April 18 — The silent film The Phantom of the Opera is screening at the Tampa Theatre, accompanied by the Florida Orchestra — You haven’t seen this 1925 horror classic until you’ve seen it in the Tampa Theatre with live musical accompaniment. In addition to the Florida Orchestra, these artists are also involved: Emmy-nominated, Grammy-winning Pops conductor Richard Kaufman; composer Carl Davis (The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Topsy Turvy, Flesh and the Devil); international film festival circuit featured performer, organist Dennis James; and award-winning and record-setting vocalist Lisa Vroman (Les Miserables, The Sound of Music, West Side Story). * April 19-22 — Ybor Festival of the Moving Image — Now in its fifth year, the YFMI continues to present unique films, theater, dance, music and motion media installations. Opening night selections include art installations New Ybor Paintings by Ferdie Pacheco and Untitled by Shareyar Ataie; a screening of A Moving Feast, a short documentary about Tampa’s art scene in the 70s and 80s; live jazz performance by Denise Moore and Then Some; short film screenings on a two-story outdoor screen and more. * April 20 — Indie Film Club screening and Pinellas Filmmaker Society meeting at Studio XP in St. Pete – Watch local films, promote your own work, socialize, network, eat, gab and have a good time.

Plus, there’s a very tiny, inconsequential, minor blip of an event a bit south of us called the Sarasota Film Festival happening April 13-22.

The Animation Show is an annual feature-length compilation of the best animated short films from around the world, exclusively curated by Mike Judge (Office Space, Beavis and Butt-Head, King of the Hill) and Academy Award nominated animator Don Hertzfeldt (Billy's Balloon, Rejected, The Meaning of Life).

As animation continues to be plagued as the single most misunderstood film medium, the animated short film is sadly undervalued and underexposed in American cinema, despite widespread appreciation throughout the rest of the world. With luck, popular animated shorts may see limited theatrical play, but most are relegated to the dungeons of the internet, or with luck, DVD.

The Animation Show launched in 2003, making it the first festival of animation created and produced with actual animators at the helm, and a unique and unforgettable annual program that is usually gone forever once it is out of theaters. Every year the Show works diligently to put animated shorts into more theaters than any festival in American history: giving these filmmakers the wide exposure their work deserves and sharing their short masterpieces on the big screen, where they belong.

MISS POTTER - Opens April 13

From the director of international sensation Babe comes the true story of the woman who created some of the most beloved characters in children's literature. This drama leavened with elements of comedy and romance tells the story of Beatrix Potter (Renée Zellweger), an imaginative but gently eccentric woman living in the socially and intellectually confining circumstances of Victorian England. Potter's wealthy parents are eager for her to marry a successful man and settle down, but she has ideas of her own, and has been writing and illustrating a series of stories for children centered around a character she calls Peter Rabbit. Potter's efforts to find a publisher for her stories prove difficult, but in time she finds a firm who agrees to give her book a chance, and Norman Warne (Ewan McGregor) is put in charge of the project. A strong personal bond grows between them; however, Beatrix's parents do not approve of Norman, and she is forced to choose between her mother and father and the man she loves.

Tampa Theatre Underwent Renovations on DIY Network

Tampa, Fla. (Dec. 8, 2006) - Historical Tampa Theatre welcomed DIY Network’s popular prime time home improvement program DIY to the Rescue - from Dec. 14 through Dec. 16 - to revamp its original 1926 dressing rooms and green room.

DIY to the Rescue will have help from the Tampa Theatre Restoration Society volunteers and other generous members of the Tampa Bay community. DIY to the Rescue is a do-it-yourself renovation program featuring expert advice from its co-hosts Karl Champley and Amy Devers.

The Tampa Theatre Restoration Society contacted DIY to the Rescue to update the two dressing rooms and green room, which provide an area to host the many talented performers who appear at the Theatre. Eight members of the Tampa Theatre Restoration Society, along with project sponsor The BECK Group, their subcontractors and Urban Studio Architects generously donated their time and materials in conjunction with DIY to the Rescue in order to bring new life to the eighty year-old spaces.

The Theatre’s seemingly endless ornamentation provides the perfect setting for the Theatre’s artistic and educational programming.

LIFE will celebrate Tampa Theatre and 20 other enchanting places across the United States in its cover story on “AMERICA’S 21 WONDERS.” The story appears in the final printed issue of the iconic magazine dated April 20, 2007. LIFE is distributed through 70 newspapers including The St. Petersburg Times.

“We are honored that LIFE magazine is recognizing Tampa Theatre in this way,” said John Bell, Tampa Theatre President & C.E.O. “It really is an honor for the entire Tampa community for its steadfast support for this storied landmark.
